Summer Holiday Conversation Questions & Answers

Have you already been on holiday this summer, or are you staying at home?
I went to Portugal for a week. I made sure to book the accommodation early so I could get a sea view. The beaches were stunning!

Do you usually remember to get travel insurance before you travel?
Yes, I always get travel insurance. Last year my luggage got lost, and I thought, what a shame, but the insurance saved me a lot of money.

When travelling to the US or Australia, is it better to get foreign currency before you leave, or can you just change your euros when you arrive?
I think it’s better to get foreign currency in advance. Once I waited until I arrived, and the exchange rate was terrible. Never mind, I learned my lesson.

What hotel facilities are most important to you when you travel?
For me, good facilities like a swimming pool and a spa are perfect for helping me unwind after sightseeing.

Have you ever stayed in a hotel where the staff were rude or unhelpful?
Yes, once in London. The staff were unfriendly and couldn’t answer simple questions. I thought, what a shame, because the hotel itself was nice.

When you travel alone, do you prefer staying in a twin room, a single room, or something different like an Airbnb? Why?
I usually recommend a single room for peace and quiet, but sometimes I choose an Airbnb so I can wander around the neighbourhood like a local.

What’s the most unusual or surprising thing you’ve experienced in a hotel?
Once, I booked a twin room, but they gave me a room with three beds! Never mind, I felt like a king.

If you could take a dream summer holiday anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
I’d go to a quiet, unspoilt island in the Pacific — somewhere with crystal-clear water where I could relax and do nothing.

Have you ever had a holiday plan go wrong? What happened?
Yes, our flight was cancelled. I thought, what a shame, but we stayed an extra day in the city and wandered around exploring hidden streets.

When you travel, do you prefer to plan everything or just be spontaneous?
I like to plan the basics — book the accommodation, get travel insurance, and get foreign currency — but after that, I love to just wander around and discover new places.
