Grammar – Action vs. Stative Verbs

Action verbs ( dynamické slovesá) -   opisujú činnosť, pohyb, zmenu stavu alebo konkrétnu aktivitu ( pohyb, energia), run, cook, study, clean, read → ✅ She is reading now.

Stative verbs ( statické slovesá) popisujú stav, myšlienky ( vedomie) alebo pocity, nie akciu. 

 like, love, know, believe, want, need → ✅ She loves music. ❌ She is loving music.

Stative Verbs – Main Groups

Meaning	Common verbs	Example sentence
Feelings / Emotions	like, love, hate, prefer, want, need	I like pizza. / She loves cats.
Senses	see, hear, smell, taste	I see two people. / It smells nice.
Mind / Knowledge	know, believe, remember, understand, forget, think (opinion)	I know the answer. / I think it’s great.
Possession	have, own, belong	I have a car. / This book belongs to me.

Niektoré slovesá môžu byť dynamické alebo statické v závislosti od kontextu. 

• think: I think it’s a good idea. (názor– statické) / She is thinking about her job. (premýšľa- process- aktívne)

• have: I have a car. (vlastním – stative) / I am having lunch. (obedujem - action)

• look: Why are you looking at me? (dívať sa – action)/ She looks beautiful.( vypadať- stative)

Examples – Correct vs. Incorrect

❌ I am liking pizza.  ✅ I like pizza.

❌ She is knowing the answer.  ✅ She knows the answer.

❌ We are having two cats.  ✅ We have two cats.

 Choose the correct form:
a) I (am liking / like) pizza.
b) She (knows / is knowing) the answer.
c) We (are having / have) a big car.
d) He (is believing / believes) in ghosts.

Q: Do you believe in luck or destiny? Why / why not? A: Yes, I believe in destiny. I think everything happens for a reason.

Q: What do you need right now? A: I need more free time and maybe a holiday!

Q: What do you think about learning English online? A: I think it’s great because we can meet people from different countries.

Q: Do you know your neighbours well? What are they like? A: Yes, I know them well. They are friendly and helpful.

Q: Do you understand English songs? Which ones do you like? A: Yes, I understand some songs. I like Ed Sheeran because his lyrics are simple.

Q: Do you remember your first English lesson? How was it? A: Yes, it was difficult, but the teacher was very nice.

Q: What things do you want or need to buy this week? A: I want to buy new shoes and I need to buy some food.
